More news of roster cuts are coming in, including a couple players on the defensive side of the ball. According to Adam Schefter, defensive end Mitchell Agude is being waived. And per Tom Pelissero, the Detroit Lions are waiving both offensive lineman Bryan Hudson and cornerback Rachad Wildgoose.
UPDATE: The Lions have also reportedly cut Ty Summers, per Dave Birkett. Summers was a late addition to the Lions training camp roster, but had strong preseason outings in the final two games.
UPDATE 2: Defensive lineman Pat O’Connor is getting released, per Jordan Schultz. According to Aaron Wilson, the Lions plan on signing him to the practice squad.
Agude is the most notable of the three cuts. He spent most of the 2023 season with the Lions’ practice squad, and he even started training camp on the first-team defense when Marcus Davenport was temporarily sidelined with an injury. Agude flashed potential throughout the entire preseason, and the Lions even toyed with playing him at the difficult SAM linebacker position when other experiments proved unsuccessful. He finished the preseason tied for the team lead in tackles (12) and was second in tackles for loss (two).
It’s too early to tell how the rest of the defensive end room will play out, but Agude was in competition with James Houston, Isaac Ukwu, and Mathieu Betts for one or two roster spots available.
Hudson was one of a trio of undrafted rookie centers the Lions signed following the 2024 NFL Draft, along with Kingsley Eguakun and Duke Clemens. Given he was only repping at center in the preseason, it was always going to be a difficult path to the Lions’ 53-man roster. Detroit already has a starter (Frank Ragnow) and backup center (Graham Glasgow) solidified on the roster, and Eguakun was the biggest standout among the undrafted rookies.
Wildgoose was signed to the team last Wednesday to help provide depth for the team’s final preseason game. His stint in Detroit lasted less than a week.
