Those of you privy to follow NFL news this morning have probably seen all sorts of fun posts regarding the San Francisco 49ers and the Brandon Aiyuk contract situation. Most of them untrue. We do know the New England Patriots are out of the Aiyuk Sweepstakes. There is no deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers, there is no deal with the Cleveland Browns. There is nothing done.
But don’t take my word for it. On NFL Network both Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport had a source to say the same thing while they gave a broadcast from Las Vegas Raiders practice. The source? Brandon Aiyuk’s agent, Ryan Williams, who was standing (out of focus) behind them. Tom Pelissaro asked a few questions, but Garafolo and Rapoport both said nothing was done, not even a team selected yet to iron out details.
Kyle Shanahan said yesterday nothing was done. Something both Garafolo and Rapoport reiterated on Wednesday. Since you see all sorts of knuckleheads on X and elsewhere trying to get your blood boiling, let’s settle you down: NOTHING IS DONE. Settle down. This saga isn’t over. There’s no deal with anyone yet.
Rather than post a link or take select quotes, I transcribed the entire segment below:
Garafolo: “Guys, it doesn’t get much more awkward than this. I’m about to give you a Brandon Aiyuk update. And let’s get a little wide here
*camera zooms out to a person standing a distance behind the NFL Network Team*
Brandon Aiyuk’s agent, Ryan Williams, is in attendance at Raiders practice. Why does he not have a microphone in his hand? Well, because he’s declining to comment. I asked him to come join us, give us an update, and give us the best information he could possibly give, and he said, ‘Nope, I am not commenting.’
He did say to me, I think, he did say to me, ‘Nothing is done.’ He also said, ‘Stop paying attention to everything you read on X and think it’s—’”
Pelissaro: “Mike just yell to him! Ryan can you hear me? Say something Ryan!”
Garafolo: “He can hear me. That’s what makes this so awkward. I gotta give you a Brandon Aiyuk update. You know,
*looks over his shoulder at Williams*
“If there’s anything wrong with what I’m saying, just feel free to interject at any point.
*looks at camera*
“There is no deal for Brandon Aiyuk to go anywhere as we sit here—I told you it doesn’t get much more awkward than this—there is no deal. The 49ers have had those trade talks with multiple teams— including the Pittsburgh Steelers from what I understand— but there is no trade agreement in place, there is no contract finalized. We will continue to monitor the situation all of us—”
Pelissero: “Who’s your source Mike?”
Garafolo: *looks back at Williams again*
“—to see where it goes from here. *returns to camera and points over his shoulder* This is my source. I wish this source would be on the record.
*Williams walks away Garafolo looks his direction*
“He’s gotta go, he’s very busy.
*shouts Williams’ direction as Williams goes off camera*
“Who’s on the phone? Who you talking to?
*returns to camera*
“Jason, there is nothing done at this point. Again, I think we’re getting close. I really, truly and honestly believe we are getting close, we are not there yet.”
Rappoport: “Been getting close for the last couple of days. Nothing is done. I would echo what Mike’s definitely “anonymous” source definitely didn’t just tell him two minutes before the broadcast. Here’s the interesting thing for me guys: Brandon Aiyuk has a lot of power here. Look, teams have power the 49ers can hold out, not do a trade; if Brandon Aiyuk wants to go to the Pittsburgh Steelers and he will only sign an extension there—which that hasn’t been specifically been conveyed to me but he certainly does feel like that’s a place he would like to be—then that’s where he’s going. Right? That’s sort of where we are with players nowadays the kind of leverage they have, the kind of power they have. If Brandon Aiyuk wants to go to the Steelers, then eventually, that’s likely where he’ll be going. It’s just complicated; the 49ers would have to get a deal that they would like. We’ll see whether it’s with the Steelers. Whether it’s picks or a player. I know there’s a couple other teams maybe they would have gotten a receiver, maybe that’s something still in their mind. We will potentially soon find out, hopefully God-willing. Then there’s the contract which also has to be agreed to. These are not simple transactions which is probably why for the last three or four days we’ve all been telling you the same thing: it’s not quite done yet. “
Remember back when it was the other way around? Did the 49ers have the leverage? We’ve come a long way since those days.
In any case, there’s still a chance Aiyuk sticks around. As Rapoport said, first it’s getting him to agree to a team, and we already found out the New England Patriots were a “no” (allegedly). Then, it’s getting adequate compensation back to San Francisco. Then it’s all that other stuff in between.
Buckle up, this is far from over. I say this knowing we’re probably going to get 90 more breaking news posts, but know right here, nothing is done, imminent, agreed upon etc.
