You know we can’t get through a day without talking about the Brandon Aiyuk contract situation. We know that nothing is done in terms of a deal for the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver, and that hasn’t changed. Aiyuk’s collegiate coach, Herm Edwards, even spoke on the subject.
But we do have a bit of context to what’s going on. Maybe.
First, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini has reported that the 49ers haven’t been satisfied with what the Steelers are offering. They are, however, open to other positions.
I guess that makes us wonder who the Steelers could send. T.J. Watt? Minkah Fitzpatrick? I kid. I doubt either of those names are even in discussion. For Aiyuk, the 49ers will need someone productive. So quarterback Russell WIlson wouldn’t be a fair trade.
According to Jim Wexell, who covers the Steelers, the 49ers are looking for two first-round picks.
If you ask why two first-rounders, I’ll speculate productivity, age, and the fifth-year option + franchise tag before a deal even is needed. Plus, it’s Brandon Aiyuk.
Oh, and one other thing: No matter what compensation, the team that lands Brandon Aiyuk wins the Brandon Aiyuk trade. Why? Because that team has Brandon Aiyuk. Two first-round picks soften that blow.
If you were doing a deal with the 49ers what would you give up to add Brandon Aiyuk to your team? You know what he’s capable of, but also what his contract demands are. What would you take as adequate compensation?
And if you’re the Steelers, if a wide receiver isn’t available, who would you pry off that squad to come to the Bay Area?
