Fans have reacted after NBC broadcast a graphic of former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III’s 2012 jersey with the Redskins logo edited out.
The Washington Commanders defeated the Atlanta Falcons in overtime Sunday night, clinching their first spot in the NFL playoff since 2020.
NBC’s broadcast showed a graphic comparing rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels’ record-breaking rushing season to former quarterback Robert Griffin III’s season in 2012, with the logo missing.
Newsweek has contacted NBC and the Commanders via email for comment.
The omission of the Redskins logo reignites debate surrounding the team’s decision to retire the name and logo, a reference to Native Americans, in 2020, amid broader discussions on racial and cultural representation.
The Washington Commanders dropped Redskins from its name and retired a controversial logo after protests against racial injustice erupted across the country in the summer of 2020.
The incident comes as talks reportedly continue about reintroducing the old logo, which features the profile of a Native man with long hair and two feathers, in limited capacities, such as throwback merchandise, with a portion of proceeds benefiting Native American causes.
Jayden Daniels surpassed Robert Griffin III’s rookie rushing record during Sunday’s game, accumulating 820 yards this season compared to Griffin’s 815 in 2012.
The NBC graphic juxtaposed images of Daniels and Griffin but removed the Redskins text from Griffin’s jersey.
Fans noticed the edit and took to social media to criticize the decision and to demand the return of the Redskins name and logo.
The Commanders transitioned from the Redskins name and logo to the Washington Football Team in 2020, later rebranding as the Commanders in 2022.
Reports in recent months indicate ongoing discussions about honoring the original Redskins logo through specific initiatives. However, team owner Josh Harris has stated there are no plans to restore the name.
The Commanders’ 30-24 overtime victory over the Falcons, led by Daniels’ stellar performance, secured their spot in the postseason and ignited further dialogue about their controversial branding history.
Many Commanders fans took to social media to point out the edited logo. According to Twitter Trending Archive, Redskins was the tenth most trending term on X at 12 a.m. EST, and the ninth most trending term at 1 a.m.
@WasWindow, Commanders fan on X: “They really took the name ‘Redskins’ off of @RGIII’s jersey on the graphic comparing him to Jayden’s rookie rushing numbers. F****** ridiculous @NFL.”
@FACEmafia, Commanders fan on X: “Bro they showed the RG3 graphic with Jayden passing his record and edited out Redskins smh [shaking my head].”
@gojevic, Commanders fan on X: “It’s time to bring back the Redskins logo/name.”
Montana Senator Steve Daines, on X: “Censorship of the old logo was a case of woke gone wrong.”
The Commanders last made the NFL playoffs in 2020 as the NFC East champions, finishing the season with a 7-9 record and losing in the Wild Card round. Their most recent postseason victory occurred in 2005. They last won the Super Bowl in 1992.
The Commanders will continue their playoff push, while ongoing debates about the Redskins logo’s future and its place in the team’s history are expected to persist.
