As it prepares to move to the new Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility, the Department of Recreational Sports has updated its name to the Department of Campus Recreation, better representing the unit’s mission to support recreation in a variety of forms.
“The concept of recreation has evolved beyond traditional sports or team participation,” said Carolyn Smith, M.D., acting chief wellness officer. “This change aligns with the holistic vision of the Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility and is supported by NIRSA, the national leader in collegiate recreation of which Marquette is a member.”
The Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility is set to open Jan. 13, 2025, providing physical and mental resources under one roof. Recreational Sports will be joined in the space by the Counseling Center, Medical Clinic and the Center for Student Wellness and Health Promotion.
The Department of Campus Recreation embraces the Jesuit philosophy of education in developing the mind, body and spirit while fostering the out of classroom experience. Campus Recreation facilitates the transformational learning experience by engaging students in a comprehensive wellness and activities program to develop and promote healthy lifestyles, leadership development and lifetime skills and sportsmanship.
