In a landmark moment for English cricket, the auction process selling stakes in franchises in The Hundred competition concluded with a remarkable deal for 49% of Southern Brave, acquired by GMR, co-owner of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. According to Yahoo Finance, this exchange, with GMR paying nearly £50 million ($62 million), contributed to the total value of stakes sold in the franchises soaring past £500 million ($620 million).

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) initially targeted raising £350 million ($435 million) from the auction process. Successful deals, including the high-profile purchase of London Spirit by a billionaire tech consortium featuring Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella for £145 million ($180 million), have ensured the board comfortably surpassed its target. Another significant agreement saw Cain International, partly owned by Chelsea’s Todd Boehly, investing £40 million ($50 million) for a 49% stake in Trent Rockets.

Proceeds from these sales will be distributed among the 18 well-established county teams in the domestic game across England and Wales, the historic Marylebone Cricket Club, and part of the funds will promote recreational cricket within the region. The dynamics of The Hundred, initiated in 2021, have now also drawn participation from four IPL ownership groups, complementing a growing global interest in this format of cricket.
