The Los Angeles Rams are almost back at the top, of being at the bottom, for the average NFL age after final cuts. In the Philly Voice’s annual NFL age report, the Rams came out as the second-youngest roster in the league at 25.45 years. The Green Bay Packers are the youngest team at 24.96, which if you think about it is like saying that the average of the Packers roster is the same as rookie quarterbacks Michael Penix and Bo Nix.

The Rams were not the youngest team this year, but they were the youngest every year from 2012 to 2016.

The NFL’s oldest rosters belong to the Dolphins and Vikings, tied at 26.94 years. It may not seem like two years is a big difference between #1 and #32, but with an average career length in the NFL is 3.3 years that’s like saying that the difference between the youngest and the oldest is more than half the average career-length.

Of course, the Rams would have had a slightly older roster if Jimmy Garoppolo had been on the final roster instead of suspended. Then the age of L.A.’s backup QB would go up by six years. Having Tyler Higbee on PUP brings down the average age a little bit also. Overall, most of the youth is centered on defense, especially after trading Ernest Jones, even though he’s also not that old of a player either.

Now, being among the oldest or the youngest doesn’t imply quality or a lack of quality. It’s not better to be young or worse to be young, it just is what it is. Clearly when the Rams were the youngest team for five years in a row, it was with some purpose to build a good team from the ground up and then having to replace a lot of players year after year. This time, the Rams have a lot of money they had to spend on a few veteran star players and that meant giving a lot of roster positions to rookies, whether they be day three picks or undrafted free agents.

So being young is just a fact about the Rams. It’s not a positive or a negative, but it does tell us something else about the team.
