The 2024 WTA Finals race is nearing its conclusion, with seven of the eight spots already secured for the prestigious event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, set for November 2nd to 9th.
1. Iga Świątek: The defending WTA Finals champion qualified early, thanks to another stellar season that included winning her fourth French Open title and multiple WTA 1000 tournaments. Świątek is locked in a tight battle with Aryna Sabalenka for the year-end No. 1 ranking.
2. Aryna Sabalenka: After winning two Grand Slam titles this year (the Australian Open and the US Open), Sabalenka has had a strong season. She’s currently poised to challenge Świątek for the top seed at the Finals.
3. Coco Gauff: The American phenom qualified after winning two titles this season, including her biggest at the China Open. Gauff’s consistency throughout the year ensured her third consecutive appearance at the Finals.
4. Elena Rybakina: The Wimbledon champion had a strong start to the season with several titles but tailed off in the latter half. Still, her early success secured her a spot.
5. Jessica Pegula: Pegula had a breakout second half of the year, reaching the US Open final and winning key titles in Berlin and Canada.
6. Jasmine Paolini: The Italian has had a surprising season, reaching Grand Slam finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, securing her WTA Finals debut as a result.
7. Barbora Krejčíková: Despite being lower in the rankings, Krejčíková qualifies automatically due to her Wimbledon triumph, as the WTA reserves a Finals spot for a Grand Slam champion ranked inside the top 20.
The final spot will most likely be contested between Qinwen Zheng and Emma Navarro. Zheng holds a slim lead over Navarro at the moment after reaching the semifinals at the Wuhan Open. Both players are in the running, with Zheng currently ahead by around 482 points in the race. Other contenders like Danielle Collins, Daria Kasatkina, and Paula Badosa remain mathematically alive but would need extraordinary performances to surpass Zheng and Navarro.
