Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers already has his future set, according to his agent, Luke McMurtrey, in reply to a tweet late Thursday afternoon.
Ewers, who has a year of eligibility remaining if he were to return to Austin next fall, will likely turn pro if reports from Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods.com hold.
In a tweet, Richardson attempted to clear the air, as signs point to Arch Manning becoming the team’s permanent quarterback.
“Sources say Quinn Ewers still plans to declare for the NFL Draft after this season, paving the way for Arch Manning to take over in 2025. Manning is locked in with Texas and coach Steve Sarkisian, with no plans to transfer. Right now, both are dialed in on Clemson,” Richardson wrote Friday morning.
Ewers has had a productive 2024 season thus far. Despite losing the SEC Championship against Georgia, 22-19 in overtime last weekend, he has a 71.3 QBR while throwing 25 touchdowns to just nine interceptions.
Ewers discussed his love for the Longhorns in a first-person reflection with The Players’ Tribune back in 2022, which resurfaced last week.
“It’s always been my dream to be a Longhorn,” Ewers said. “Every Saturday for as long as I can remember, my family would be glued to the TV watching Texas play. Just the other day my mom was telling me about when I was two years old, and we watched Vince Young and the 2005 team win the Rose Bowl together. [Apparently, I had kid-size Longhorn gear and everything.] Stuff like that just reminds me how, at my core, it’s always been Texas.”
The Longhorns enter the College Football Playoff as the fifth seed, hosting Clemson in the opening round. If Texas were to win, it would play Arizona State in the quarterfinals of the Peach Bowl on New Year’s Day.
Texas finished the regular season 11-1, with its lone loss coming against Georgia. If the two teams were to match up for a third time, the stakes would be immense for a conference that continues to showcase itself as college football’s powerhouse – the SEC.
