American Jessica Pegula, the No 6 seed, defeated Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-6 (3) to advance to the last 16 of the Qatar Open at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha on Tuesday afternoon.
Pegula, ranked No 5, will face the winner of the match between Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 10 seed, and Armenian Elina Avanesyan next.
Svitolina, ranked No 22, edged out Marketa Vondrousova (0-6, 6-2, 7-5) in the previous round of the Qatar tournament.
