DOHA: As Qatar aims for a technology-driven future by 2030, the next five years are crucial for enhancing digital inclusion. This requires continuous efforts from the government, NGOs, and private companies to support the digital journey, ensuring all residents benefit from technological advancements.

Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) recently launched the 2024 Digital Inclusion Index (DII) for Qatar report, which guarantees equal access to digital services for all and highlights the evolution of digital inclusion as a cornerstone of the Digital Agenda 2030 and Qatar National Vision 2030.

The index is a strategic tool intended to measure and promote Qatar’s advancements in digital inclusion, ensuring sustained progress and international recognition.

Reem Al Mansoori, Assistant Undersecretary for Digital Industry Affairs at MCIT said, Qatar’s leadership in digital accessibility rights, which is currently proudly ranked number one globally, sets a new benchmark in inclusivity and accessibility. “As we launch our Qatar DII, our goal is clear: to establish a foundational standard that promotes full inclusivity in every facet of digital engagement for everyone living in Qatar.”

“Qatar’s focus on digital inclusion aligns closely with the objectives set in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This initiative ensures that every resident, regardless of socioeconomic status, has the necessary resources and capabilities to participate in an increasingly digital world. By addressing key areas such as digital accessibility, affordability, ability, and content availability, the Index enables targeted interventions to advance societal wellbeing, economic growth, and educational opportunities,” she added.

The unique framework of Qatar’s DII measures seven pillars of digital inclusion, offering a nuanced understanding of how technology integrates into daily life. It not only evaluates Qatar’s digital readiness but also highlights areas for improvement, ensuring continuous progress towards a more inclusive digital future.

Qatar aims to enhance its leading position in digital inclusion regionally and globally by continuously investing in digital infrastructure and education. The future goals include a 10% increase in digital access, a 30% improvement in digital competencies for citizens and residents, 15% boost in digital skills, and a 20% boost in digital trust.

The report highlights the notable achievements that have positioned Qatar as second regionally and 16th globally in digital inclusion. Meanwhile, 93% of population has access to the Internet as the country ranks 9th globally in Internet access and also 85% of population has digital skills.

The report also emphasises that advanced regulatory frameworks focusing on technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are essential for fostering digital trust. It reveals that 83% of Qatar’s population rely on basic digital activities (such as, e-commerce, e-government), reflecting the nation’s success in creating a trusted and attractive digital environment.
