One Australian couple don tok about di “traumatic” moment cabin crew put di deadi-body of one passenger very close to dem for inside one Qatar Airways flight.
Mitchell Ring and Jennifer Colin, wey bin dey travel go Venice for dia dream holiday, tell Australia Channel 9, say one woman wey siddon beside dem die as dem dey fly from Melbourne to Doha.
Di couple say cabin crew bin put her dead body, wey dem cover wit blankets, next to Oga Ring for di remaining four hours of di flight, and dem no offer to move am, even though empty seats dey for di plane.
Qatar Airways tok say dem don apologise for “any inconvenience or distress dis incident fit don cause”, and add say dem dey di process of contacting passengers.
Di couple tok say Qatar Airways or Qantas, di airline wey dem take book di flight neva contact dem or offer dem support.
Dem tok say protocol suppose dey to ensure say dem look afta passengers wey dey onboard for such situations.
Oga Ring tell Channel Nine Current Affairs programme say di staff no quick respond wen di woman collapse, but “unfortunately dem no fit save di lady, and e dey pretty heart-breaking to watch”.
E say di cabin crew bin try to move her body go business class “but dem no fit as she big and dem no fit carry her di aisle”.
Oga Ring say di crew bin see empty available seats beside am.
“Dem say, You fit move ova please?’ and I just say, ‘Yes no problem’.
“Den dem put di lady for di chair I siddon.”
While dem move Ms Colin go anoda empty seat nearby, Oga Ring say cabin crew no give am dat option – even though vacant seats dey.
Wen di plane land four hours later, dem tell passengers to remain for dia seats, while medical staff and police board di plane.
E say as ambulance officers begin dey comot di blankets dem take cover di woman, im see her face.
Di couple tok say di airline no get duty of care” for customers and staff.
“Dem suppose contact us to ask if we dey okay? If we need some support, and if we need some counselling?”
Ms Colin bin call di experience “traumatic” and say: “We totally understand say we no fit hold di airline responsible for di poor lady death, but protocol suppose dey to look afta di customers on board.”
For one statement, Qatar Airways say: “First and foremost our thoughts dey wit di family of di passenger wey sadly pass away on board our flight.
“We apologise for any inconvenience or distress dis incident fit don cause, and we dey di process of contacting passengers in line wit our policies and procedures.”
One Qantas tok-tok pesin say: “Na di operating airline dey manage di process to handle dis kain incidents, wey in dis case be Qatar Airways.”
Barry Eustance, one former Virgin Atlantic captain, tok say di number of pipo wey dey die onboard airplane dey “occur more frequently pass wetin pipo tink” but say as far as im know, no specific protocol dey in place for such situations.
“On a long flight e dey depend largely on wen e happun and wia e happun and wetin di crew get in terms of facilities to put di body for anoda place becos for aeroplane, access no dey to di hold, crew rest area dey but e dey for di crew so e fi dey problematical.”
Dem fit don block di toilet area or galley area, e tok, but di crew dey required to keep a certain number of toilets available.
Oga Eustance say im no wan dey judgemental as im no know di full situation, but im dey surprised say di crew no try move Oga Ring if vacant seats dey.
“I go expect say di crew do all dem fit do to avoid dat situationt. You dey create potential future liabilities in terms of di trauma of di people wey siddon next to di deadi-body,” e tok.
“In my experience di crew go normally try isolate di body, so no passenger go dey exposed to di body and vice versa, for respect and privacy but also for medical reasons. You get dead body wey dey uncontained and all dat goes with it.”
