In-flight food menus are rarely considered fine dining. However, in recent years, airlines have done what they can to change that, with improvements that include features such as celebrity chef collaborations and fun treats such as in-flight afternoon tea service.
Now adding a level of opulence to their business class in-flight menu, Qatar Airways has announced an exciting new caviar service for select long-haul business cabin flights. This caviar service is available either on its own or as an addition to the various meal courses.
“The new caviar service can be enjoyed as either a standalone option or part of the onboard meal courses,” said Xia Cai, Senior Vice President Product Development and Design, at Qatar Airways, in an email. “We’ve listed it on the menu as a starter course, with 15 grams of caviar per person. The most optimum way of consuming caviar is on its own or along with accompaniments that are offered with it, along with chilled vodka or Brut Champagne.”
The luxurious caviar service, which launched in-flight on August 15 in select markets, includes Baeri Caviar with Balik style salmon as well as a variety of accompaniments (such as creme fraiche, chopped chives, crumbled hard-boiled egg, and onion), blinis and Melba toast.
This new menu addition has rolled out on 13 Qatar routes, including those between Doha and Boston, Dallas, Hong Kong, Houston, London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, New York, Paris, São Paulo, Singapore, Sydney, and Washington. “We are always looking at enhancing customer experience on board. The 13 routes will allow us to understand popularity and uptake, in order to make informed decisions moving forward,” said Cai.
Adding caviar to the menu was all about making in-flight meal service, which can often feel uninspired, a little bit more special. “The caviar service was created to enhance customers’ experience, and continue to exceed expectations for our business class passengers,” said Cai.
So far, the caviar option has been getting great feedback. “While this just went into service on August 15, we’ve gotten great feedback from our business class passengers on our caviar options,” said Cai.
While caviar service is an exciting upgrade, this isn’t actually the first airline to make it an option. Emirates, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Air France, Korean Airlines, Japan Airlines, and Etihad all offer a caviar option in their first class cabin. However, this is generally a feature in the first class cabin — so it’s nice to see the business class getting the first-class experience.
