Purdue men’s basketball won their two previous games as part of the Rady Children’s Invitational which included games against then 23rd ranked Ole Miss. When the latest AP poll came out today Purdue saw another jump.
This early in the season, voters tend to overreact to each week and Purdue is no exception. Purdue started 14th in the pre-season poll, rose to 13th, jumped to 6th, fell back to 13th after losing to Marquette, and now has jumped up to 8th overall. It’s been a wild ride.
Nothing is more evidence of this phenomenon than the UConn Huskies falling from #2 to #25 after going 0-3 in Maui. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a -23 drop in the poll from one week to the next. While yes they will likely find their way back into the top 15 or even top 10 if they reach their potential, the record right now doesn’t justify this. Polls are wild is what I’m trying to say.
Purdue has remained in the top 15 of the AP poll for 42 consecutive weeks. Tennessee is the next closest team and they are only at half of Purdue’s 42 weeks. Yet another thing in which the Volunteers fall to the Boilermakers.
Purdue is next in action Thursday at Penn State.
