Purdue football added another experienced transfer to its secondary — one who spent much of the season starting for a College Football Playoff contender.
The Boilermakers announced the signing of former BYU safety Crew Wakley on Wednesday. The 6-0, 200-pound Utah native, who began his career at Utah State, has two years of eligibility remaining.
Wakley started seven games in 2023 and started the Cougars’ final 10 regular-season games this past season. He recorded 59 tackles (four for loss), one interception and six passes defended as a redshirt freshman and 44 tackles and two picks last season.
Wakley is the fourth defensive back added from the transfer portal since Barry Odom’s hire as coach. He’s the third safety, following Tahj Ra-El (Memphis) and Richard Toney Jr. (TCU).
Purdue needed to add multiple players at safety after two-year starter Dillon Thieneman transferred to Oregon, Joseph Jefferson and Anthony Brown entered the portal and Antonio Stevens completed his eligibility. The top returnee is Smiley Bradford, who played 213 snaps as a true freshman.
