Prairie Meadows added an additional day of live horse racing to the 2024 schedule, on Thursday, Sept. 26, to make up for the Thoroughbred races canceled because of a storm on Monday, July 15.
The additional card, scheduled for a 7 p.m. EDT post time, will be the first day of the final week of live racing on the 2024 schedule at the Altoona, Iowa, track.
“There’s a possibility of running as many as nine Thoroughbred races on Thursday, Sept. 26,” Thoroughbred racing secretary Stuart Slagle said. “We will take entries and draw for the added day on Friday, Sept. 20.”
There is a possibility of running additional quarter horse races on Sept. 26. That decision will be based on available purse money and the strength of quarter horse entries for Sept. 23, the last day of overnight races currently. If additional quarter horse races are offered for Thursday, those races will be posted as extra races on the overnight entry sheet for Sept. 23.
The 2024 season at Prairie Meadows ends on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, with the Iowa Classic Night program, which includes season-ending championship stakes races for Iowa-bred quarter horses and Thoroughbreds.
