Sparks dance on Pine Island transformers as Hurricane Milton passes
Pine Islanders worry about their electrical grid, as sparks like this have been showing up across the island’s transformers during Hurricane Milton.
Global power management company Eaton, known for its electrical equipment and services, is investing $340 million in a new transformer facility in South Carolina.
The manufacturing facility will be the third in the United States for three-phase transformers and its 11th facility in the state. 700 new jobs will also be added to the local community with the facility’s establishment.
“Eaton’s new operation in Union County, which will mean 700 new jobs for the local community, represents a major vote of confidence in South Carolina’s highly skilled world-class workforce. Their investment is a remarkable milestone for Eaton and Union County, and we celebrate the opportunities it will create throughout the state in the years ahead,” said S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster.
Here’s what to know about Eaton and the new facility.

Eaton will transform an 861,000-square-foot facility at 6802 Furman L. Fendley Highway in Jonesville into a manufacturing site.
Production and hiring at the new facility will begin in 2027.
