WORCESTER ― A Planet Fitness gym and fitness club will open at the Mercantile Center in downtown Worcester.

Core Development and Management, an independent franchisee of Planet Fitness, will open a location at 90 Front St. this summer, according to the building’s owner.

The gym will take up 16,000 square feet of ground-floor space, next to the former site of a CVS that closed in 2023, below the Registry of Deeds office.

It’s a 12-year lease.

“As we turn the page into 2025, we’re looking forward to working out alongside a growing base of neighbors and residents here in downtown,” Charles “Chip” Norton, managing director of the Mercantile Center and Franklin Realty Advisors, said in a news release.

The gym will be located in a section of the building that has been largely vacant. The CVS storefront remains empty, with a nearby section of the building now being used for a temporary Van Gogh exhibit. The space targeted for Planet Fitness is used each holiday season for Toys for Tots. The Telegram & Gazette newsroom is located in the building.

Planet Fitness has two other locations in Worcester, and also has gyms in Marlborough, Milford, Shrewsbury, Sturbridge, Webster, West Boylston and Westborough.
