Planet Fitness, 2000 Cooper Foster Park Road in Lorain, honored United States military veterans Nov. 11 by dedicating a wall of photos of its members when they were in the service.
The wall display, “Thank A Local Hero Happy Veterans Day,” is located near the entrance of the fitness center.
The exhibit is the brainchild of Lauren Przeslica, member service representative at Planet Fitness, who placed the 46 photos of veterans Nov. 10.
“It’s important to honor those who have served,” Przeslica said. “The United States of America is the greatest country, and we are blessed to live here.
“And, I don’t think the veterans get the recognition. I work at the gym and I see a lot of people, but I don’t know them outside of here.”
Przeslica said she wanted more Planet Fitness members to know who the veterans are.
She said she spends a great deal of time in Avon and has noticed the banners with photos along some of the streets that honor veterans.
Przeslica said the least she could do was to get permission from management to ask for photos of veterans to place them on the wall.
“I’m happy,” Przeslica said. “It turned out good.
“The feedback’s been really good. People like it.”
Members even went around shaking the hands of veterans who were working out in the fitness center, Przeslica said.
“If you are a veteran, I hope that you will have a good Veterans Day,” she said. “I thank you for your service.”
Fred Lozano, who served as a U.S. Marine from 1966-69, is Planet Fitness member who provided of photo of himself.
Lozano, 77, who was a sergeant and was deployed to Europe, Cuba and Vietnam, works out just about daily at the fitness center.
The wall is a tribute to people in the country who have a lot of belief and respect for people who join the military and to protect freedoms, he said.
Fighting for the country is something most veterans never will forget, Lozano said.
“They do it out of honor,” said Lozano, who indicated he will celebrate Veterans Day visiting fellow veterans at the Ohio Veterans Home Sandusky.
Lozano, a former Lorain City Councilman, Civil Service president and bailiff for Judge Thomas Elwell, said he tries to go once a month to the Ohio Veterans Homes to spend time with the veterans.
Anthony Nicolan, 93, works out three days a week at Planet Fitness.
Nicolan was a U.S. Marine from 1952-54 and fought in Korea.
“I like it,” he said referring to the wall in Planet Fitness honoring veterans. “It’s wonderful.
“I’m alive, and I’m going to work out.”
