LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Created by The Boutique Hub in 2020, Pink Friday takes place one week before Black Friday and focuses on getting shoppers to spend their money at local businesses first before they shop at national retailers for the biggest shopping day of the year.
Ashley Alderson, founder and CEO of The Boutique Hub, explains why she created this event.
“We started Pink Friday in 2020 when small businesses needed a boost, with the purpose being to support small businesses first, before Black Friday,” Alderson said. “Today, 10,000 small businesses participated worldwide!”
Stephanie Massengale, owner and president of The Matador here in Lubbock, says Pink Friday goes a long way during the holiday season.
“We feel like it’s super important because we’re a small business,” Massengale said. “We are local, we’re actually alumni-owned, and so it really helps us when you can come out and support local before you go to some of the bigger places.”
Massengale explains Pink Friday isn’t a competition between businesses, but rather an opportunity for people to support local business.
“I think it is important that we help each other out,” Massengale said. “Yes, we kind of compete for customers, but in the long run, it helps all of us.”
Another key aspect of Pink Friday is when you walk in the doors, you’ll be greeted with an experience you won’t see at bigger stores.
“They come in and they get personalized service that you don’t get maybe from big block stores,” Massengale said. “We just had a customer in that was looking for something particular, and so I’m able to call and hunt around and try to find that for her. You get some extra customer service and experience when you shop small and local.”
The Matador is offering special discounts and double points for reward members. Massengale sees this as a way for them to get the most bang for their buck.
“I think we see a lot of people that like to come and support local and small first, which is exactly what this day is about,” she said.
Even though its name is Pink Friday, The Matador will be celebrating it all weekend long, allowing customers more opportunities to give back to a small and local business.
The Matador will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
