Penn State football’s 2024 season has officially come to an end with the team’s loss to Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl, just one game short of the national championship. Despite that loss, the team played a program-record 16 games this season, giving fans one of the most entertaining seasons in recent memory.
Our photographers followed the team from coast to coast, covering every game from the sidelines. As we do with each individual game, let’s take a look back at our favorite photos from this season.
Penn State started on the road this season, a rarity, with a matchup in Morgantown against West Virginia. Despite a long rain delay, the Nittany Lions came out swinging in the second half and handled the Mountaineers with ease.
Penn State’s first home game of the season was against Bowling Green, which finished much closer than fans predicted it would be. In the end, the Nittany Lions pulled out a win.
Penn State’s final non-conference opponent of the regular season was Kent State, a team it took care of with ease after the scare against Bowling Green the game prior.
The Nittany Lions’ Big Ten opener was against ranked opponent Illinois. Despite not being the official White Out, James Franklin asked the fans to bring their “White Out…Energy” to the game, which the fans took literally, unanimously agreeing to wear white without official instruction.
Penn State’s final home game for a few weeks was against UCLA in the team’s annual Stripe Out game. The Nittany Lions won once again, remaining undefeated on the season.
USC awaited Penn State in California for the Nittany Lions’ first in-conference game on the West Coast since the Big Ten expanded. The game was a thriller, ultimately heading to overtime. After a missed field goal by USC, Penn State made a field goal of its own for the win.
After a week off, the Nittany Lions headed north to Wisconsin for a primetime matchup with the Badgers. Things looked concerning at halftime: Wisconsin was in the lead and Penn State quarterback Drew Allar was out with an injury. However, backup quarterback (at the time) Beau Pribula stepped in and confidently led the Nittany Lions to a comeback win.
Penn State vs. Ohio State was the marquee matchup of the season, with both teams ranked very high headed into this game. While the Nittany Lions kept it close, offensive struggles in the red zone ultimately led to their first loss of the season.
After picking up its first loss, it was critical for Penn State to bounce back against Washington in the annual White Out game. The team did just that, demolishing the Huskies in a no-contest game.
Penn State kept the ball rolling the next week on the road against Purdue, winning in another commanding, high-scoring victory.
In its final road game of the regular season, Penn State headed way north to Minnesota. This was another close contest with Nittany Lion fans sweating a potential loss that could’ve eliminated Penn State from playoff contention. The defense kept it close in the second half, and a fake punt to Luke Reynolds ultimately sealed the deal for a Penn State win.
The Nittany Lions closed out its 11-1 regular season at home with a win over Maryland, clinching the team’s spot as a host of an opening-round game in the College Football Playoff.
With a surprise Ohio State loss to end the season, Penn State found itself in the Big Ten Championship against newcomer Oregon. The game was in reach for the Nittany Lions the entire time, but Penn State ultimately couldn’t complete the comeback.
The loss to Oregon may have been a blessing in disguise, gifting the Nittany Lions a home playoff game and an easier path to the semifinals. Penn State faced SMU in its first-ever playoff game, dominating the Mustangs for a thrilling home victory.
Penn State then headed to Arizona, where it faced Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl. The game was closer than the box score suggests, but the Nittany Lion defense contained Ashton Jeanty and shut down the Broncos’ offense for the win.
Penn State’s magical run ended in heartbreaking fashion at the Orange Bowl. After leading Notre Dame for most of the game, the Fighting Irish staged a comeback to tie the game. As we all know, an unfortunate interception by Drew Allar gifted the Irish prime position for a game-winning field goal, ending Penn State’s playoff run.
That’s all for now, but with many of Penn State’s star athletes returning for next year, it’s sure to be another thrilling season.
