Hanging over the head of professional golf is the question of when the PGA Tour and LIV Golf will merge. The rival golf leagues agreed to a merger in June of 2023, but it was never determined when and how that would take place.
The PGA Tour is in Florida this weekend for the Arnold Palmer Invitational, while LIV is in Hong Kong. Rory McIlroy has been a star on the PGA Tour for over a decade now, when asked about a merger Wednesday he wasn’t optimistic.
“It takes two to tango,” McIlroy said on a unification deal between the PGA and LIV. “If one party is willing and ready and the other isn’t, it sort of makes it tough.”
This goes against what Tiger Woods and PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan have said in recent weeks. Both have hinted that there’s been progress on a deal to merge, saying it could get done as soon as this year.
“I don’t think (a deal) has ever felt that close,” McIlroy said. “But I don’t think it’s any closer.”
Two-time U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau has been the face of LIV, and despite his contract ending after this year it doesn’t sound like that’ll end anytime soon.
“I continue to see LIV Golf growing,” DeChambeau said during a press conference in Hong Kong. “It’s going to grow at an exponentiating pace for years to come, and we aren’t going anywhere.”
LIV has it’s own group of stars, headlined by DeChambeau. There’s also Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and rising star Joaquin Neimann. DeChambeau, Rahm, Mickelson, Koepka and Johnson have a combined 17 major wins. And that doesn’t even include the likes of Bubba Watson, Patrick Reed and Cameron Smith, who have all won majors in recent years.
