DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – Police responded to Duluth East Friday night, after what the department calls a “concerning incident” during East’s football game against Hibbing.
In a note to parents Friday night, Duluth East Principal Kelly Flohaug says the school received reports of an adult in the stands that had a possible handgun fall to the ground. The person allegedly picked up the gun and took off.
DPD School Resource Officers responded, searching the area where the person was seen.
They also searched the surrounding stadium and parking lot.
The person was not found and is believed to have left the area right after the gun was noticed.
School Resource Officers stayed there through the end of the game, and we’re told there will be extra police presence at the school dance that followed the game.
According to Flohaug, no weapons are allowed on school grounds, regardless of whether you may have a concealed weapons permit.
The district is telling parents that the well-being of students, families, staff, and community members is their top priority.
An investigation is ongoing.
