The Grade 1, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby is set for Saturday at Parx, and it drew a field of 11 3-year-olds with possible Breeders’ Cup aspirations.
Dragoon Guard is the 9-5 morning-line favorite as he steps up off consecutive Grade 3 scores in the Indiana Derby and West Virginia Derby. Stronghold is the 5-2 second choice from the far outside draw, looking to turn the tables after finishing second in the Indiana Derby when last seen.
The Pennsylvania Derby goes as race 13 of 14 at 6:10 p.m. EDT. FanDuel TV will have live coverage of the race.

HRN picks for Penn Derby
This week’s Super Screener has circled the Grade 3 Turf Monster Stakes on the Pennsylvania Derby undercard with top value play Talented Man.
“His longer odds are attributed to the fact that he is being evaluated off his two recent dirt races,” Shutty notes about Talented Man. “Being back on turf, we are going to see improvement. How much is difficult to calculate, but getting back to a pressing style here is ideal for this turf course, on which he is 2-for-2.”

Ed DeRosa’s Pennsylvania Derby fair odds believe that Stronghold can turn the tables on Dragoon Guard on Saturday as the fresher horse.
DeRosa also has Cotillion Stakes fair odds, and he believes there’s a money-making opportunity even with Thorpedo Anna figuring to be odds-on. Mystic Lake is a live long shot and can at least get second.
What follows is a list of recent speed figures for the Cotillion contenders, illustrating why Thorpedo Anna will be such a short price.

J. Keeler Johnson’s latest Horses to Watch column believes Unmatched Wisdom is a logical Pennsylvania Derby contender if you draw a line through a dull effort in the Travers. Matt Shifman’s Pennsylvania Derby picks echo those sentiments.
