Three years ago, James Franklin signed a new 10-year contract worth $7.5 million per year, plus incentives, to remain with Penn State through the 2031 season. On Friday, a section of Franklin’s contract was revised.
The performance incentives section of Franklin’s contract was revised to account for the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. Beginning this year, the CFP includes one additional game compared to the previous four-team format from 2014-23.
Penn State’s Committee on Equity and Human Resources voted unanimously to revise Franklin’s contract on Friday morning, according to a university spokesperson.
It’s not immediately clear how exactly Franklin’s incentive payouts will change. In the iteration of the contract signed in 2021, Franklin received the following CFP-related incentives:
Reaching the four-team CFP: $400,000
CFP national championship runner-up: $500,000
CFP national championship winner: $800,000
Penn State, ranked No. 4 nationally, is in prime position to make the inaugural 12-team CFP. The Nittany Lions are 10-1 overall with a 7-1 mark in Big Ten play.
If they beat Maryland on Saturday (3:30 p.m., Big Ten Network), the Nittany Lions are all but guaranteed not only a spot in the playoff but a first-round home game at Beaver Stadium.
