Paula Badosa has clarified her response to Rafael Nadal’s sad retirement announcement by sharing a moving story between the pair.
Fortunately for Spanish tennis, the sport is increasingly looking in safe hands on both the men’s and women’s front.
Paula Badosa revealed earlier this year that the extent of her injuries and fitness saw doctors suggest she might have to quit the sport for good.
Having started her comeback way outside the top 100, a litany of strong performances, including a run to the last four in Beijing, have helped Badosa back up to 14th.
The Badosa ended her 2024 season early however, after another injury setback forced her to retire at the Ningbo Open.
With Rafael Nadal’s retirement announced earlier this month, Badosa shared a moving story of how Nadal helped her through repeated injury challenges.
Badosa has demonstrated exactly why has been ranked as high as second in her career.
Having lost just five of her last 26, Badosa’s early season end will hopefully merely be precautionary.
The inevitable, but no less heartbreaking news of Nadal’s upcoming retirement had a pertinent effect on Badosa, she has revealed.
“He’s always been a person who has helped me a lot. When I was injured, during my recovery, he gave me advice, he was always there,” Badosa explained, via Punto de break.
“Obviously I thought about sending him a message since his statement, but I also wanted to leave him alone because I know it’s a very intense moment and I don’t like to invade spaces.
“I’m going to wait a little, but obviously I’m going to get in touch when the time comes and I’ll thank him again for what he’s done for me.”
The Spaniard’s legacy extends far beyond his 22 Grand Slam titles; he will always be remembered for his humility, sportsmanship, and kindness both on and off the court.
His respect for opponents, regardless of the outcome, set him apart as a true ambassador for tennis.
Nadal faced every match with intensity but always maintained a gracious and modest demeanor, even in his greatest triumphs.
He inspired millions with his resilience, battling injuries and setbacks with an unbreakable spirit. Fans admired not only his skill but his genuine warmth and gratitude toward those who supported him.
In an era of fierce competition, Nadal’s character shone just as brightly as his accomplishments.
