Paul Finebaum thinks Colorado football, Deion Sanders are ‘heading for disintegration’

Colorado football finds itself still searching for its first signature win of the season in Year 2 of the Deion Sanders era after the Buffaloes’ 28-10 loss to Nebraska on Saturday.

Colorado has shown struggles on both ends of the ball through two weeks. Colorado’s defense has given up 783 total yards, and is tied for 58th in the country in red zone defense through two games. Last week, the Buffaloes were shut out 28-0 in the first half vs. Nebraska before hitting a third-quarter field goal and notching a fourth-quarter, 5-yard touchdown connection between Shedeur Sanders and LaJohntay Wester.

And ESPN college football personality Paul Finebaum doesn’t seem to believe things will get better at Colorado with Sanders.

“This thing feels like it’s heading for disintegration. I wouldn’t call it a divorce because frankly, they (Colorado) need him more than he needs them,” Finebaum said Wednesday on ESPN’s “Get Up” alongside Mike Greenberg. “But at some point, I think Deion Sanders is going to say, ‘I got to get out of here and go somewhere else.'”

With the loss to Nebraska last week, Colorado has now lost seven of its last eight games under Sanders. In that span, Colorado has been outscored 265-181 by its opponents.

“It’s definitely a panic,” Finebaum said. “As far as Coach Prime, it’s rinse and repeat. It’s the same story after every loss, which pretty much every game. …

“He’s really brilliant with the media. I’m not so sure he is brilliant as a head coach. I don’t see any improvement from this team. Instead of talking about the (College Football Playoff), which we were talking about a couple of weeks ago, now we’re trying to figure out a way on whether Colorado can get to a bowl game.”

With the playoff expanding to 12 teams this season, the Buffaloes were considered a dark-horse at-large bid. However, a controversial Week 1 win vs. North Dakota State, followed by the loss to Nebraska, has derailed Colorado’s hype heading into 2024. As it stands, Colorado’s last bowl game was a 55-23 loss to Texas 55-23 in the 2020 Alamo Bowl.

Wednesday’s comments from Finebaum aren’t the first of the week that he has made about Sanders and the Buffaloes. He made similar comments on a Sunday appearance on “The Matt Barrie Show.”

“I don’t think Deion Sanders will be there next year,” Finebaum said. “This season, when they fail to go to a bowl game, he’s going to look around and try to find an exit strategy. No more Travis (Hunter), no more Shedeur (Sanders), what’s the motivation for him to beat himself up? So, I think enjoy the Deion show. It will be playing somewhere next year. It may be off-Broadway. It may be on Broadway. But it won’t be in Boulder.”
