WESTMONT, Pa. – Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) and the Gannon men’s golf team each had a big Monday as each moved into the lead on the opening day of the two-day Sunnehanna Collegiate tournament.
Parrini, a sophomore, shot a 3-under-par 67 to take a one-shot edge at Sunnehanna Country Club, while the Gannon team finished at 5-over 285 to take a three-shot advantage into the second round. Millersville is in second place at 288, while two teams are tied for third at 291. The tournament is hosted by Pitt-Johnstown.
Parrini shot a solid 1-over 36 on the front, but he caught fire on the back nine. He birdied Nos. 10, 11, 13, and 18 and added five pars as he finished 4 under on the back. He leads West Chester’s Connor Strine by one shot.
All six Gannon golfers had solid rounds. Redshirt sophomore Rasmus Seppanen (Bastad, Sweden/Akademi Bastad Gymnasium) and senior Michael Wareham (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) each carded 2-over-par 72s, as Wareham had four birdies on the day. Seppanan and Wareham are tied for 13th in the 91-player field.
Senior Elijah Ruppert (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) rounded out Gannon’s scoring with a 4-over 74 to move into 21st. Junior Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) added a 5-over 75.
GU’s Kyle Westfall (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy (Erie)) is tied for seventh with a 1-over-par 71, but his score does not count toward Gannon’s score because he is playing as an individual.
The Golden Knights will conclude play in the tournament on Tuesday with 18 holes.
