WESTMONT, Pa. – Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) and the Gannon men’s golf team completed a dominant performance at the two-day Sunnehanna Collegiate tournament on Tuesday.
Parrini, a sophomore, won the individual title by shooting a 1-over 71 on Tuesday to finish with a 2-under 138 total. He held off surging teammate Rasmus Seppanen (Bastad, Sweden/Akademi Bastad Gymnasium) by one shot after the redshirt sophomore shot a 3-under 67 to match Parrini’s low round of the tournament.
As a team, Gannon led by three shots going into the final round, but the Golden Knights only expanded that advantage by shooting a 1-under 279 score on Tuesday to finish at 4-over-par 564. Second-place Millersville closed with a 14-over 574 and was the only team to finish within 17 shots of the Golden Knights.
Parrini was extremely consistent on the Sunnehanna Country Club course on Tuesday as he carded 16 pars and one birdie. He parred all nine holes on the back nine.
Seppanen recorded five birdies, including two on the front nine and three on the back, as he claimed second place.
Two other Gannon players tied for 10th as senior Michael Wareham (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and junior Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) as both finished at 4-over 144. Wareham shot his second consecutive 72 on Tuesday, while Delorenzi fired a 1-under 69 in the second round after opening with a 75.
Gannon senior Elijah Ruppert (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) tied for 19th after shooting a 72 on Tuesday to close the event at 146.
Playing as an individual, Kyle Westfall (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy (Erie)) carded a 149 (71-78).
This was Gannon’s second consecutive team title. The Knights were coming off a first-place effort in the Ferris State Bulldog Fall Classic.
