Rookies and veterans have begun reporting to training camps all across the NFL. Football is officially back, and with it comes all the preseason hype. There’s plenty to be excited for in the coming season for the Philadelphia Eagles, particularly when it comes to some of their young talent.
Two Eagles defenders, linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, Jr. and cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, have been named to the preseason first-team All-Rookie team by CBS Sports’ NFL analyst Chris Trapasso.
Trotter, Jr. comes to the Eagles with some big shoes to fill. His father, Jeremiah Trotter, Sr., was a stalwart linebacker for the Eagles defense over three stints with the team from 1998 to 2001, 2004-2006, and finally retiring after his 2009 season with the team. The younger Trotter may not be quite the linebacker his father was – at least not yet – but Trapasso likes his potential to be productive in the Eagles’ defensive scheme.
Trotter’s instincts compensate for his lesser athletic profile, and the Eagles scheme linebacker production as well as any team in football because of their uber-talented and deep defensive front.
Behind Trotter in the Eagles’ defensive backfield, Mitchell comes in with some lofty expectations of his own. Paired up with perennial Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay, the Eagles have the potential to have one of the best cornerback duos in the entire NFL. There will certainly be an adjustment period for Mitchell as he goes from Toledo to the NFL level, but Trapasso believes the young corner has “All-Pro upside”.
Mitchell’s rookie teammate in the Eagles defensive backfield, Cooper DeJean, also earned preseason honors from Trapasso, making his second-team as a slot cornerback.
