Popular golf influencer Paige Spiranac has been on a posting spree of on social media and one of the recent topics she discussed the other day were the “unspoken” rules of golf. Are they anything like the mostly antiquated “unwritten” rules of baseball? Let’s find out.
“It’s time to look like an expert golfer and I’m here to help you,” Paige Spiranac begins her latest golf tutorial video. “One of my biggest pet peeves is when more experienced golfers gate-keep these rules then complain about new golfers in the game. We are changing that today.
“At nicer golf courses it is a faux pas to change into your golf shoes in the parking lot. So make sure you come ready to play golf, or bring your shoes to the locker room to change.
“If you’re a brand new golfer, always abide by the double par rule.” She doesn’t explain what that rule is. More gate-keeping?
“Honors is where the person with the lowest score on the previous score on the previous hole gets to tee off first on the next hole. Some people are sticklers for this, but it does slow down pace of play.” We know how Paige Spiranac feels about pace of play.

“So I always recommend asking on the first hole, do you want to play honors or do you want to play ready golf?” Paige Spiranac continued. Again, she doesn’t explain the term “ready golf,” but much like the “double par rule” we can probably figure it out, right?
“On a tee box it’s proper etiquette to stand in front of your playing partner, never down the line or behind them.” This one might be a little confusing since I have played golf for most of my life and I don’t know what she means by “stand in front of your partner” on a tee box. Won’t they hit me with the ball?
“Same rules follow on the putting green, and especially don’t stand in their line of sight so you can read their putt. Frowned upon! Also don’t walk in their through-line, which means that if they miss the putt you don’t have to putt back through your spike marks.”
That’s all she has for today, but her video does beg one question: if these rules of golf etiquette are so important to people, why are they unspoken?

Now, if you are really, REALLY new to golf, Paige Spiranac also took it all the way back to the very basic basics recently with an instructional video on literally how to swing a golf club.
