HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – The Hastings chapters of the Teammates Mentoring program held its annual fundraiser at Southern Hills Golf Club in Hastings on Friday. The organization was founded in 1991 by Hastings native and former Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne, and his wife Nancy, to provide a safe space for children in their community.
“People in the community come and they mentor students, they meet with them once a week for about 30 minutes, all we tell them to do is, talk, hang out, play a game, just be there for the students and it truly just makes a difference in the student’s life, and hopefully leads them to a successful future,” said Miranda Schumacher, Hastings Teammates program coordinator.
The 15th annual Tee-Off for Teammates event helped raise over $10,000 for the chapter, more than their yearly operating budget.
”Funding our program, essentially funds the future of Hastings because if we’re investing in our youth now, and if we’re making sure that kids have support, that they feel cared for, that’s going to make much more successful and overall good people to contribute to Hastings, to contribute to our future society,” said Schumacher.
The charity golf event featured 10 community groups and companies competing, which helped to raise the funds. The organization serves at-risk students in Adams Central, St. Cecilia and Hastings school districts, all with the aim of continuing to invest in the youth of the community of Hastings.
”If we’re investing in that now and providing for that program, so that mentors can go to schools and make an impact on kids, I truly think that we have a greater Hastings future ahead of us,” said Schumacher.
The Hastings Teammates chapter said they’re always accepting new volunteers and donations.
