Oregon played better and harder at Michigan than the past two weeks, but the final result was unchanged in a fourth straight loss.
Jackson Shelstad had 18 points, four rebounds and four assists to lead four players in double-figures for the Ducks in an 80-76 loss to the No. 24 Wolverines Wednesday night at Crisler Center.
Oregon (16-7, 5-7 Big Ten) got within one possession multiple times during the second half, but could never fully close the gap due to poor shooting and turnovers. UO shot 43.3% from the field, but went just 2 of its final 12 from the field, including 0 for 7 from three in that span, and did not make a field goal in the final 3:18.
“I thought we made a step,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said on postgame radio. “Our effort and our flying around, our talk was better. Obviously the boards, second-chance points we got beat seven there. Then points off turnovers, we had so many unforced turnovers.
“Get it down to a two-point game and Jackson throws it out of bounds, TJ (Bamba) threw it out of bounds — unforced, (Jadrian Tracey) turns it over — unforced. We get it down to a two-point game, we had three unforced turnovers. Really hurt us. But the guys battled. I had no problem with their effort in this one.”
Michigan went just 1 of its final 9 from the field but held on behind 17 points from Will Tschetter and Vladislav Goldin and Danny Wolf each added 15. Wolf also had 12 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season.
The Wolverines (17-5, 9-2) scored 25 points off 12 turnovers by the Ducks and had a 21-13 advantage in second-chance points. UM remained undefeated at home and snapped a three-game skid in the all-time series.
Nate Bittle had 16 points and seven rebounds, Keeshawn Barthelemy had 15 points, five rebounds and six assists and Bamba had 13 points and a career-high 10 rebounds for the Ducks.
Shelstad went 7 of 17 from the field, including 2 of 6 from three, and made a pair of free throws. He scored 12 points in the first half as Michigan took a 41-36 lead into the break thanks to its second-chance points and capitalizing off UO turnovers.
After a 1 of 5 start from the field in the first half, Bamba sent 3 of 7 from the field, including 1 of 3 from three, and went 4 of 5 from the free throw line in the second half. The senior also had seven of his 10 rebounds after the break.
Oregon will attempt to end its longest losing streak since 2013-14 on Saturday (9 a.m., FOX) at No. 9 Michigan State.
“Overall it was a positive,” Altman said. “There is no moral victories. But we needed to get better. I told the guys before the game, ‘we’ve got to get better every game. We’ve narrowed it down to a six-week season here if we’re not careful. We got to get better.’”
