The Oregon Ducks faced the Wisconsin Badgers today in Camp Randall to defend their 10-0 record and #1 standing in college football.

The Ducks went into this game tired and banged up, being the only FBS team that has had to play eight games in a row without a bye. The question going into the game was whether the Ducks could survive to next weekend’s bye.

Wisconsin won the coin toss and elected to receive to start the game.

The Oregon defense may not have had Jordan Burch, but they completely stuffed the Badgers’ first drive with a three-and-out. Wisconsin punted, and the Ducks started their first drive on their 40 yard line.

Oregon started their first drive well, especially on the ground, but Wisconsin stopped them at the Badgers’ 18-yard line, and Atticus Sappington kicked a 35 yard field goal to put the Ducks on the board first, 3-0.

The Badgers started on their 27-yard line, and after avoiding what should have been an interception went backwards and punted.

The Ducks started on their 27-yard line and their drive was highlighted by a 32-yard long shot by Dillon Gabriel to Evan Stewart. The next pass, however, was thrown a bit behind Terrance Ferguson, and it bounced off of him and into the arms of Wisconsin for an interception.

The Badgers started on their 11-yard line, and that’s where they were on 4th and 10, and punted. Oregon started their next drive with great field position at their own 46-yard line.

The Ducks shots themselves in the foot with penalties on the next drive, and Sappington punched in a 42 yard FG to bring the Ducks to a 6-0 lead.

The Oregon kickoff brought yet another penalty, and Wisconsin started on their 30 yard line. They advanced to their 34-yard line to close the first quarter.

Wisconsin found better success on their next drive, and worked their way into the red zone. They were stopped at the Oregon 14 and kicked a 31-yard FG to make it a 6-3 ball game.

Oregon’s next drive stalled at their 41-yard line, after picking up just one first down. The Ducks punted, and the Badgers began their next drive on their 20-yard line.

The Badgers picked up a first down, but Oregon’s defense held firm and Wisconsin was forced to punt, and the Ducks started on their 27-yard line with 5:47 left in the half.

Oregon’s offense had been anemic so far in this half, and it sure felt like they had to get it together going into the locker room. Well, that did not happen – Oregon could only get to midfield and had to punt, and the Badgers started on their own 25-yard line.

After keeping Wisconsin on their side of the field, the Ducks finally gave up a big pass, a 43-yard bomb from Braedyn Locke to Vinny Anthony II. Later, on 3rd down and 6 on the Oregon 12, a defensive pass interference extended the drive and was all that Wisconsin needed to score a touchdown and take the lead going into the half, 10-6.

Coming out of the half, Oregon picked up a first down, but that was it for their first drive and the Ducks punted, putting Wisconsin on their 20-yard line.

The Badgers drove at will and reached the Oregon 6-yard line, but a penalty on 3rd and six negated a Wisconsin touchdown. Locke was sacked on the next play and the Badgers had to settle for a field goal and the 13-6 lead.

Oregon employed a mix of pass and run to get to the Wisconsin 37-yard line, but the quarter ended without the Ducks have scored, continuing their third quarter woes.

But with the dreaded 3rd quarter behind them, Gabriel connected on a couple of passes to Ferguson and Stewart, and Jordan James ran 11 yards for the touchdown. Just like that, Oregon tied the game 13-13.

A touchback began Wisconsin’s first drive of the 4th quarter. A ferocious Ducks defense held the Badgers to a three-and-out and they punted, putting Oregon on their 32-yard line.

Oregon pushed to their 43, but completely fell flat when 3rd and 10 resulted in a Dillon Gabriel sack. They punted with the touchback putting the Badgers on their 20-yard line.

Wisconsin started their drive with 8:00 remaining in the game. The Badgers could do nothing and punted from deep in their own territory. Gary Bryant, Jr., returned the ball 12 yards and Oregon had short field position on the Wisconsin 43-yard line.

The Ducks kept the ball on the ground for the next five plays, reaching the 16-yard line of the Badgers. Oregon could not quite get to the end zone, and Sappington kicked a 24-yard FG in stiff wind to give the Ducks the lead again, 16-13.

Wisconsin had nothing in the face of this Oregon defense and turned the ball over on downs. Oregon pushed to the Wisconsin 20 and turned the ball over on downs with a fake FG with 1:45 remaining in the game.

Wisconsin ran a play and then Locke was intercepted by Matayo Uiagalelai, and all Oregon had to do was run out the clock. They did so, bringing us to the final score of 16-13.

Wisconsin finished with 226 total yards; 96 rushing and 130 passing. The vast majority of that production came in the 2nd quarter.

Braedyn Locke was 12/28 for 96 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. Tawee Walker led the rushing attack with 97 yards on 20 carries. Vinny Anthony II had 53 receiving yards on 4 catches.

Dillion Gabriel had an off day, but wind may have been a significant factor. Gabriel ended 22/31 for 218 yards with zero TDs and 1 INT. Jordan James was a beast, running for 121 yards on 25 carries with 1 TD. Evan Stewart led the receivers with 10 receptions for 92 yards.

Oregon has to know that they escaped with a win to remain unbeaten. Now they have a bye week to heal and get better.
