Ons Jabeur shared how she would react if her coach told her to stop playing drop shots.
The Tunisian is known for her artistry and innovation on court, which has left many of her opponents bemused by the shots she is able to produce.
This makes the 30-year-old one of the most unique players on the WTA Tour and she cemented her place in the top 10 until she began to suffer from injuries.
In 2025 Ons Jabeur will certainly be one to watch as she bids to climb back up the rankings following a long-term shoulder problem.
The drop shot is not played as frequently on tour, though the likes of Aryna Sabalenka has now incorporated the drop shot into her game.
But since Jabeur has been on the circuit the drop shot has been part of her repertoire and it has worked to great effect.
It is a shot she enjoys playing and if her coach were to tell her to stop playing it, Jabeur would not be happy.
“I think I have been doing that for a long time [using variety],” the three-time Grand Slam finalist told the Nothing Major Podcast.
“I think that is why it took me a long time to go from juniors to professional because I felt like I had so many choices in my game that I couldn’t choose one shot to do.
“That made it a little bit hard. The slices and everything, I think I would fire any coach who told me not to do drop shots because that would kill my game.”
Jabeur is not the only player who is known for having an excellent drop shot.
Since he burst on the ATP Tour back in 2021, Carlos Alcaraz has used to drop shots with great feel and disguise that has won him plenty of points.
Jabeur has been impressed by how Alcaraz plays the drop shot, and thinks she may have played a part in his decision to play it.
“He has a really good drop shot because he can place tactically with it, you don’t know when he is going to do it,” Jabeur added. “But I like to say that he got inspired by me!”
