Two rounds down. Two rounds remaining to determine who’ll take home the gold, silver and bronze at Le Golf National.
So far the 2024 Olympic men’s tournament has come to resemble a typical PGA Tour event. Aggressive play has been rewarded with birdies coming in bunches. The trio of Xander Schauffele, Hideki Matsuyama and Tommy Fleetwood share the lead at 11 under par.
Yet the closing four holes on the Albatros Course have teeth, particularly the par-4 18th hole with water down the left side of the fairway and around the green requiring precise play at the finish. Just ask Matsuyama and Fleetwood, who made double bogey and bogey respectively to fall back into a tie with Schauffele.
With the weather forecast looking fairly clear, but also without much wind, expect a soft course to remain that way, and players needing to stay aggressive to move up the leaderboard. Fifteen players are within six shots of the lead, including major winners in Jon Rahm (nine under), Scottie Scheffler (six under), Matt Fitzpatrick (five under), Jason Day (five under) and Rory McIlroy (five under). All are capable of shooting something in the mid-60s during Saturday’s third round and being right in the mix come Sunday.
