Central Ohio golfers enjoyed a strong opening round in the Division I boys state tournament Monday at NCR Country Club in Kettering.
Olentangy Liberty (292) leads the 12-team field, three shots ahead of Akron Hoban heading into the final round Tuesday.
Competing in its sixth state tournament, Liberty is seeking its first title. The Patriots finished second behind Dublin Jerome in 2017.
“We’re definitely pleased with the results,” Liberty coach Ryan Snivley said. “This course is definitely a challenge and with the drop in temperatures from yesterday to today presented an extra challenge. … We’re confident and we’re happy where we’re at right now.”
Noah Andry paced the Patriots with a 72, tied for sixth behind leader Michael Stagnaro (68) of Cincinnati St. Xavier. Liberty’s Jackson Harris and Noah Mulford are tied for eighth (73).
Jerome is tied for fourth (307) with Zach Radtke (70, second) and Brady Barnum (76, tied for 20th) leading the way.

In its first state tournament since 1997, Thomas Worthington is tied for eighth (319) behind Jack Flores (71, tied for third) and Jack Marsh (73, tied for eighth).
“(Flores and Marsh) definitely played in some high-pressure events throughout the summer,” Thomas coach Neil Bittel said. “This is a different beast, and they’re both in contention (for the individual state title). They played well in tough conditions, and we’ll see what tomorrow brings.”
Marsh’s round included an eagle on the par-4 No. 6 hole from approximately 90 yards.
“It was a lot of fun to see it trickle in,” Marsh said. “It was one of the saving shots of my round that helped me lock back in and finish strong. I haven’t had one of those in a while.”
Central Ohio also has three individuals at state. New Albany’s Alexander Ritter shot a 72 (tied for sixth), Upper Arlington’s Bric Baird carded a 74 (tied for 13th) and Olentangy’s John McClelland shot an 81 (tied for 39th).
