The 2024 college football season ends with Monday’s College Football Playoff national championship.
The inaugural run of the 12-team CFP wraps up with No. 7 Notre Dame (14-1) taking on No. 8 Ohio State (13-2) at 7:30 p.m. at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Fighting Irish are seeking their first national came in 1988, while the Buckeyes are seeking their first since 2014.

Notre Dame is a No. 7 seed and enters the national championship on a 13-game winning streak. The Fighting Irish have already posted the most wins in program history and will seek to end the season with hardware to celebrate the historic season. Notre Dame’s last loss came on Sept. 7, a 16-14 loss to Northern Illinois in a pay game.
Despite earning a No. 8 seed, Ohio State has arguably been the best college football team, including a quarterfinal win over No. 1 Oregon. Since a regular-season finale loss to rival Michigan, the Buckeyes have bounced back to outscore opponents 111-52 in the postseason.
Monday will be the ninth meeting between the programs and the third one in three years. Ohio State leads the all-time series 6-2, including six consecutive wins. Other significant storylines include Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman, who faces his alma mater and seeks to become the Black coach in FBS history to win a national championship.

Ohio State quarterback Will Howard arrives at Mercedes-Benz Stadium about two hours before kickoff. Howard, who is in his first year with the Buckeyes, has thrown for 3,779 yards, 33 touchdowns to 10 interceptions.
Both the Buckeyes and Fighting Irish have plenty of claimed national championship hardware. Notre Dame enters tonight with 11 claimed national titles, while Ohio State has eight. The Fighting Irish would be tied for second with Michigan if they win, while the Buckeyes would tie Pitt for fifth most with nine if they pull it off.
The Buckeyes’ game against the Fighting will air on ESPN. Chris Fowler (play-by-play) and Kirk Herbstreit (analyst) will be on the call, with Holly Rowe serving as the sideline reporter. Streaming options include the ESPN app and Fubo, the latter of which offers potential subscribers a free trial.

Though Monday’s national championship game is projected to have a high of 30 degrees and a low of 20, according to a forecast from The Weather Channel, the frigid outdoor temperatures should not impact the retractable roof at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Ohio State and Notre Dame are more accustomed to cooler temperatures, but they won’t have to deal with outside variables in the indoor stadium.
