LeBron James, meet Quinn Kwasniak, the Ohio high school basketball player who now holds the mantle as the state’s No. 4 all-time scorer.
Kwasniak, who is signed to play in college at Army, recently passed the NBA’s all-time leading scorer in the state record books after back-to-back 50-point outings. After this past week, he has totaled more than 2,700 career points — passing James, former West Virginia coach Bob Huggins, and NBA Hall of Famer Jerry Lucas along the way.
James came into the season sixth all-time in scoring, but has now been bumped down a spot by the sharpshooting guard from Cornerstone Christian Academy. After he passed the future Hall of Famer, Kwasniak was presented with a replica of James’ high school jersey from St. Vincent-St. Mary.
“Coach Danny Schikowski gave me a LeBron high school jersey, which was cool,” Kwasniak told the Willoughby News-Herald. “My favorite teacher, Mr. O’Keefe, loves LeBron, so he was all into it. It was also really nice of the Open Door coach to let them stop the game and he even prayed with us after. My poppa and him were friends so that was special.”
He is now less 300 points away from being the third player in Buckeye State history to crack 3,000 career points, joining former Ohio State guard Jon Diebler and Zach Rasile who currently plays at Division II West Liberty.
The all-time scoring mark is 3,208 points set by Diebler in 2007, and Kwasniak has seven regular-season games and the state playoffs to take a crack at.
Scoring more than 400 points over the final seven or so games of the season might be a tall mountain to climb, but Kwasniak is close to breaking another all-time record as well. In four years on varsity, he has knocked in 465 3-pointers, second all-time to Rasile. The latter holds the record at 485, but it might not stand much longer.
He broke Rasile’s record for for 3-pointers in a season last year with his 155 to Rasile’s 140 and has a chance to eclipse that yet again. Through 14 games this year, Kwasniak is averaging 38.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 7.7 assists and 2.0 steals per contest while hitting 88 of his 224 attempts from deep.
