OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WLOX) – To be able to ride your golf cart on Ocean Springs Road or not was the big question for the Ocean Springs Board of Aldermen regarding the roundabout in the area.
A resolution was presented to prohibit the usage of golf carts on the road but was discussed Tuesday evening with both sides being brought to the table.
One side said no to golf carts because of the safety issue it could bring to first responders who are trying to get to Singing River Hospital, which is located close to the roundabout.
The other side said since the speed limit is 25 miles per hour and an ordinance is in place that says golf carts can’t be operated on a street that goes past 30, it makes sense to keep it.
The board decided to table the issue and revisit it later.
Another development was approved down the street from the roundabout. A former trailer park site on Groveland Road will be used to create four new lots and two retail developments on the property. The city said those two retail spots will be a Chick-fil-A and and a Chipotle.
The developers said they chose that spot because of how close it is to the main drag and will benefit both parties greatly.
“It will bring a lot of tax dollars to the city of Ocean Springs along with two big national tenants we are bringing in who are very well known,” Senior Project Manager Garrett Baker said. “The city will certainly benefit from those tax dollars and our company will make a business doing it.”
While the board voted to table the golf cart agenda, they will look at ways to make sure traffic flows easier in that area.
