Oaklawn joined the list of tracks that have canceled racing because of severe winter weather in the forecast.
The Hot Springs, Ark., track said in a news release that it canceled racing for Friday, Saturday and Sunday because of “continued freezing temperatures and impending severe weather.”
No graded stakes are affected by the cancellation, but the $150,000 Pippin Stakes had been scheduled for Saturday.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Hot Springs from Thursday afternoon until Friday evening. Heavy mixed precipitation expected, with total snow
accumulations between 4 and 8 inches and ice accumulations around
a tenth to a quarter-inch.
Saturday and Sunday are expected to be sunny, with high temperatures of 35 degrees on Saturday and 41 degrees on Sunday.
Oaklawn will host the Grade 3 Southwest on Jan. 25. The 1 1/16-mile race offers 20-10-6-4-2 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the top five finishers.
