ALBANY, N.Y. (WCAX) – New York officials are reminding people that lotto gifts don’t belong under the Christmas tree if the recipient is under 18.
The New York State Gaming Commission says studies show the younger a person is when they start gambling, the more likely they are to develop a problem.
The Gifting Responsibly campaign helps educate people about the risks of youth gambling and promotes responsible gambling practices for those who are old enough to gamble.
“New York Lottery games are intended to provide responsible fun and entertainment for adults – not kids,” Gaming Commission Chair Brian O’Dwyer said in a statement.
The New York lottery also reminds retailers that it is a misdemeanor to sell tickets to anyone under 18.
People seeking help for problem gambling can call New York State’s free and confidential HOPEline 24/7 at 1-877-8- HOPENY (1-877-846-7369) or text HOPENY (467369).
