LET’S FUCKING COOK!!!
I’m pretty sure that it was announced or at least strongly believed that NBC was going to bring back “Roundball Rock” if they ever got the rights for the NBA back. But that tweet not only confirmed the song is back but showed how seamlessly it fits with even today’s game.
I’m sure there are plenty of young’ns out there that don’t know the song or only know it from Saturday afternoon games between Marquette and fucking Xavier. But trust me when I say that was the anthem of sports in the 90s. The NFL had its requisite bangers. The NHL On ESPN was a jam. And even Major League Baseball had great jams on FOX and Baseball Tonight on ESPN.
But I always had the NBA On NBC song just a smidge higher, partially because my Knicks were actually contenders during that time and partially because John Tesh’s performance of it is the perfect mix of awesome and ridiculous at the same time in what has to be the most important answering message of all-time.
You know a song is special when SNL made a sketch about it back when SNL actually mattered and pumped out funny stuff.
Now it seems the NBA On NBC is back in it’s original form and everything is right with the world. I am also saying that because my Knicks appear to be contenders for the first time since the 90s, which somehow makes this all even better (I will choose not to get mad that Jalen Brunson wasn’t included in the announcement video over Tyrese Haliburton’s disgusting jumper since his Pacers did beat whatever was left of Brunson’s Knicks in seven games along with I guess Bam needing to be a rep for last year’s Eastern Conference champion Heat?).
Anywayyyyy, not only is the song coming back, but John Tesh is also looking to somehow make this classic better.
As someone that hates change, I reserve the right to turn on NBC if the song is not true to the original or too over the top. But I also think there’s a chance Tesh wrote a literal perfect song that is incredible no matter how many people perform it.
If NBC is opening the Suggestion Box, I’d like to respectfully request we bring back these Bob Costas monologues before games that made a big basketball showdown seem like the most important thing on the planet.
