MUSKEGON, MI – Weekend showcases have expanded in recent years and provided strong challenges for basketball teams across Michigan to test themselves against elite competition while giving sports fans across the state some wildly entertaining contests.
Several Muskegon-area basketball teams picked up confidence-building wins this weekend with Muskegon, Grant, and Newaygo notching victories on the boys side of the slate and Kent City, Fremont and Newaygo grabbing wins in girls basketball action.

Muskegon 66, Ann Arbor Huron 46
The Big Reds held a narrow 29-22 advantage at halftime and outscored the River Rats 37-22 in the second half to pick up an impressive win at the 2K25 Showcase at Aquinas College.
James Young was named MVP of the game for Muskegon (14-2), after he dropped 20 points, while Elija Langston added 15 points, Keashaun Johnson added 10 points, Darryl Thompkins Jr. had eight points and Danelle Lawrence had seven points.
Iowa State commit Macari Moore finished with a game-high 24 points to pace Huron.

Grant 63, Fremont 36
The Tigers opened the game on a 20-7 run in the first quarter and continued to roll past the Packers in the second half to secure an impressive win at the Newaygo County Showcase on Saturday.
Zaiden Phillips finished with 20 points to lead Grant (14-2), while Ethan DeLong added 11 points and Sincere Hatch had 10 points.
“It wasn’t our best game, so we didn’t reach our goal of getting better every day,” said Grant head coach Dan George. “We’re still working to execute every possession, and my guys will keep pursuing excellence.”
Mossen Green finished with nine points to lead Fremont (4-12), while Brayden Crosley added six points and Cuyler Cook-Hansen had five points.

Newaygo 68, Hesperia 65
The Lions knocked down a pair of free throws with a minute left to play to take a late lead and the Panthers missed a last-second 3-point attempt as the hosts survived for a hard-fought win at the Newaygo County Showcase on Saturday.
Isaiah Miedema finished with 19 points to lead Newaygo (6-9), while Hunter Yearsovich and Blake Kerr each added 16 points and Ethan Reyburn had 13 points.
Ethan O’Neil finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Hesperia (5-12), while Jared Tanner added 20 points, including six 3-pointers.

Niles 52, Reeths-Puffer 46
The Rockets fell behind 23-13 at halftime and rallied back within two possessions late but couldn’t complete the comeback effort in a non-conference loss to Niles on Saturday.
Marvin Moore finished with 22 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead Reeths-Puffer (5-11), while Drew Brooks and Kristian Brown each added seven points and Elliot Schneider and Brayden Mitchelson each added five points.

Kent City 39, Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills 36
The Eagles used a pair of clutch free throws from Hailey Kamphuis in the final seconds of regulation to secure a hard-fought win over Kenowa Hills on Saturday.
Kamphuis finished with 11 points, three rebounds, and two assists to lead Kent City (10-3), while Kenzy Freeland added 11 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists and Alyssa Miller had seven points.
Mel Hollman scored 15 points to lead Kenowa Hills.

Fremont 73, Grant 54
The Packers trailed by five points after the first quarter but outscored the Tigers 24-7 in the third quarter to secure a hard-fought win on Saturday in non-conference action.
Taylor DeKuiper finished with 24 points, 15 rebounds and five steals to lead Fremont (13-2), while Mia Clemence added 22 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and five steals, Riley Chase had 10 points and seven rebounds and Khaila Noordyk had six points.

Howard City Tri-County 43, White Cloud 38
The Indians trailed by one point at halftime but couldn’t slow down the Vikings in the second half as they dropped a non-conference matchup at the Newaygo County Showcase on Saturday.
Andi Vincent finished with 25 points to lead White Cloud (4-9).
“We struggled with turnovers and free throws, whereas Tri-County did a better job taking care of the ball, and they made their free throws,” said White Cloud coach Caleb Wilk.

Newaygo 47, Shelby 40
The Lions led 25-22 at halftime and held off the Tigers down the stretch to secure an impressive non-conference win at the Newaygo County Showcase on Saturday.
Ruby Hughes registered a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds and three steals to lead Newaygo (12-2), while Kaelyn Stephens added 10 points and three rebounds, Amaya Lathrop and Naomi Schillman each added six points.
“It was a great effort from the girls this evening. Shelby is a well-coached and talented team,” said Newaygo coach Nathan Thomasma. “This was a big team win for the girls.”
Jayna Burmeister finished with a double-double scoring 17 points and grabbing 17 rebounds to pace the Tigers (12-2), while Kylie Brown grabbed seven rebounds and Michelle Peterson dished out four assists.
