MAPLE PLAIN, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s golf team wrapped up competition at the Minnesota Classic, hosted by Bethel University at Pioneer Creek. The Gustavus “B” team took seventh, while the first team finished eighth in the field. Host Bethel won the tournament with an 887, followed by UW-Eau Claire (888).
The Gustie “B” team took seventh with a three round 907 (295-310-302), while the “A” team was three shots behind in eighth with a 910 (303-296-311).
Wyatt Carlson (Jr., Wayzata) continued to lead the Gusties, posting a three round 218 for 10th place. Carlson carded a 74 in both Sunday rounds, with five birdies on the final day of competition. Carlson was the highest Gustie finisher overall, as the junior was two-over for the weekend and just five shots out of first place.
Jimmy Abdo (Fy., Edina) was the story of the Gustie “A” team on Sunday, as the first-year jumped up seven spots through the two rounds to card a 79-70-73-222 for the weekend. Abdo, in just his second collegiate tournament, claimed eight birdies through the final two rounds to take 25th and lead the Gustavus first team.
Tommy Hiniker (5th, Edina) took 33rd for the Gustie “B” team, moving up one spot from Saturday with a 225 three round total. Pelayo Perez Crespo (Jr., Sotogrande, Spain) was next, taking 38th with a 226. Cameron Longie (Sr., Hutchinson) finished 78th (238) while Aradheea Gawade (Fy., Mumbai, India) rounded out the Gustie “B” team with a three round 246.
Behind Abdo for the Gustie first team was Chris Gutuza (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa), who tied for 46th with a three round 229. Gutuza posted a 71 in the second round with five birdies. MIAC Athlete of the Week Teddy Kaste (Sr., Apple Valley) took 59th in the talented field with a 231, followed by Jack Reinardy (Sr., Andover) in 69th with a 236. Blake Forrest (So., Maple Grove) shared 78th with Longie, posting five birdies on day two to move up seven spots on the leaderboard.
“Coming off of a big win last weekend, I think expectations were very high,” said Head Coach Scott Moe. “We did not start off the way we wanted to, and I think it really affected our psyche. We need to be a little tougher mentally and react well to any adversity. We will get better this week and have a really good game plan going into a really good tournament at Eau Claire country club. The field will be strong and the golf course is great. Jimmy had a nice weekend on our first team and a top-10 finish for Wyatt playing on our second team was fantastic.”
The Gusties will head to Wisconsin next week, taking part in the UW-Eau Claire Wrigglesworth Invitational.
