MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team is giving back.

On Thursday, a group of Wildcats volunteered their time at the Women’s Center in Marquette.

They raked leaves and cleaned up brush, grass clippings and trash from around the building.

NMU Wildcats Head Coach Casey Thousand says the Marquette community is one of the team’s biggest supporters and nothing is more important than helping them out.

“It’s important for us to show our players you have to give back to our community no matter how old you are, no matter what happens, the more that you can give back, the more fans hopefully it brings out to our games,” Thousand explained. “So it works both ways but we’re just a really appreciative team.”

NMU Junior Guard Sarah Newcomer says volunteering builds a bond between the team and those who support them.

“They do so much for us and our program, so just finding ways that we can give back, like my coach said we just want to jump on them and do as much as we can,” Newcomer added.

The Wildcats kick off their season at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, at Vandament Arena with an exhibition match against the University of Wisconsin-Sevens Point.
