Wednesday’s action at the 2025 BNP Paribas Open featured former world No. 4 Kei Nishikori advancing to the second round, defeating Jaume Munar 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(3).
Hobbling his way to the finish line, Nishikori hit one ace, won 63 percent of his first serve points and broke his Spanish opponent on four occasions during the nearly three hour match.
Currently ranked No. 76 in the world, Nishikori will next face No. 18 seed Ugo Humbert in the second round.
Other winners on Wednesday included Tristan Boyer, Christopher O’Connell and Thiago Seyboth Wild.
Matches that are still on deck on Day 1 will feature Reilly Opelka taking on Roman Safiullin.
Former two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova returned to action at the Tennis Garden on Wednesday, losing her comeback match to Varvara Gracheva from Russia 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Returning to action after giving birth to her first child last year, Kvitova hit two aces, won 60 percent of her first serve points and broke serve on five occasions during her defeat.
Gracheva, who is currently ranked No. 70 in the world, will next face No. 9 seed Mirra Andreeva for a place in round three.
Other winners on the day saw Caroline Garcia, Lulu Sun, Irina-Camelia Begu, Hailey Baptiste, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto all reaching the second round
