“I’d coach her,” the former Wimbledon finalist wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter), jumping into a conversation with fans who thought Gauff should axe Gilbert.
It came after Gauff crashed out in the fourth round of the US Open, where she was the defending champion. After hitting 19 double faults, the 20-year-old admitted she was keen to add new voices to her camp.
“I definitely want to get other opinions,” Gauff said. “I definitely want to look at other things because I don’t want to lose matches like this anymore.”
Just over two weeks after her US Open loss, Gilbert announced their split. “Thanks to @CocoGauff and the entire team for an absolutely amazing summer run in 2023 and for 14 months of incredible team effort,” he wrote on Wednesday.
“Coco, at just 20 years young, your future is incredibly bright, and I wish you nothing but continued success ahead. I’m excited for the next chapter in my Coaching career.”
Gauff later posted about the end of their partnership, writing: “Thank you @bgtennisnation ! We had an incredible run and I wish you all the best in the future!”
The seven-time title winner still has her secondary coach, Jean-Christophe Faurel, in her corner. Gauff’s split with Gilbert is the latest in a series of team changes across the WTA Tour.
World No. 4 Elena Rybakina parted ways with Stefano Vukov ahead of the US Open. She won her opening match but withdrew from the tournament and has not played since. Naomi Osaka also recently split with Wim Fissette and appears to be working with Patrick Mouratoglou.
Fissette is a renowned coach, previously working with the likes of Angelique Kerber, Victoria Azarenka and Kim Clijsters. If Gauff is looking for a new head coach, Fissette could be a strong candidate.
