The NFL is taking its time before making a decision on whether to discipline Nick Bosa for flashing a “Make America Great Again” hat in support of Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy during NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” postgame show.
As Melissa Stark interviewed quarterback Brock Purdy, tight end George Kittle, and running back Isaac Guerendo after the 49ers defeated the Cowboys, 30-24, Bosa crashed the set and flashed his MAGA hat.
CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported Friday that the NFL is “looking into” the situation.
“There will not be a determination on any potential fine until later next week. I’m told there is no consideration for any potential suspension,” Jones reported.
NFL rules stipulate that players are not permitted to “wear, display, or otherwise convey messages, through helmet decals, arm bands, jersey patches, mouthpieces, or other items affixed to game uniforms or equipment, which relate to political activities or causes” when they are at the stadium on game days.
(If only the same prohibition could be true for election ads, which air seemingly nonstop during NFL games for months leading up to the vote.)
The CBS report said it “appears” that the NFL’s determination on whether to fine Bosa will wait until after the presidential election between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris on Tuesday.
During postgame media availability on Sunday, Bosa punted on elaborating more about his gesture.
“I’m not gonna talk too much about it, but I think it’s an important time,” Bosa told reporters.
