The Green Bay Packers had not had a player claimed off of waivers at cutdowns since Taysom Hill was claimed by the New Orleans Saints in 2017. That all changed on Wednesday when three former Packers were picked up by other clubs.

Gone are receiver Grant DuBose, offensive lineman Royce Newman and safety Anthony Johnson Jr., players who were all originally draft picks by Green Bay. DuBose ended up on the AFC’s Miami Dolphins while Newman and Johnson landed in the conference, signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Giants, respectively.

This summer, DuBose battled with Malik Heath, who made Green Bay’s initial 53-man roster, for the sixth and final receiver spot on the team. It was a tight race that DuBose even had a lead in after the first week of the preseason.

Newman was always viewed as a potential reserve offensive lineman for the Packers this year, despite starting in the past. With rookie fifth-round pick Jacob Monk emerging as a swing interior offensive lineman off of the bench and Sean Rhyan potentially rotating in as a right guard with rookie first-round pick Jordan Morgan, Green Bay chose to keep three tackles (Andre Dillard, Kadeem Telfort and Travis Glover) as reserve offensive lineman over Newman, a guard.

Johnson was expected to be a waiver claim by someone today, as he battled with Javon Bullard and Evan Williams for the starting safety job opposite of Xavier McKinney in training camp. The Packers chose to keep Kitan Oladapo and Zayne Anderson, two players who are expected to be significant special teams contributors in 2024, over Johnson, who would have been more of a reserve defender.

While three former Packers draft picks were picked up by other teams, five others passed through waivers unclaimed. Quarterback Sean Clifford, quarterback Michael Pratt, receiver Samori Toure, cornerback Kalen King and kicker Anders Carlson are now eligible to sign with Green Bay’s practice squad, as they are true free agents.
